El mar, la mar

The border between Mexico and the US is an almost volatile space, where twilight is melding with the night crickets while a man’s voice is telling us about monsters that dwell in the desert. In J.P. Sniadecki and Joshua Bonnetta’s film, the contemplation of things is always double-edged: beyond the sad reality of trying to flee, in the successive shots retracing, piece by piece, the travellers’ journey along the vast expanse of the desert, there is a continuous rummaging through places and things. Filmed on 16 mm stock, the documentary constantly alternates between sound and image, between strips of sky or dried out vegetation, and personal tales of people who have attempted to cross the border hoping for change. Every now and again, the image turns black and for several minutes we are directly faced with only the words of the exiled. Without the pretext of dynamic images and without the scenic landscape, we become directly exposed to a place where salvation and the looming threat of an irrevocable destiny are two edges of the same sword.
