synopsis

For most cinephiles, Chantal Akerman’s name is linked to an exploration of the stylistic possibilities contained in the variable rapports between real and cinematic time, and to a problematization of the traditional representation of femininity. In both cases, the general tone of her filmography thus seems rather serious - but humour, at times burlesque, other times verging on absurdity, is nevertheless present as early as her first short film, the radical "Saute ma ville" ("Blow up my town", 1968). Among the numerous clichés that surround Jewish identity - an otherwise central theme of Akerman - the tendency to reveal the comical dimension in tragedy is one of the few that the Belgian director’s films don’t contradict. This approach can also be found in “Golden Eighties,” the only musical in her oeuvre. The action takes place in a temple of capitalism: a shopping center where, aside from the materialistic preoccupations that mercilessly enslave the protagonists’ lives, there is still some passion left. Two shops, a fashion boutique, and a hair salon compete with each other, while between the employees and the owners of each of them there is a commerce of feelings going on, which brings them close one time, then pushes them apart, and so the dance continues. Except for the obvious references to classical American musicals and, with more emphasis, to their respective European reinterpretations, especially to those made by Jacques Demy, Akerman’s originality resides, on the one hand, in the very modern and free perspective she has on love - seen as an autonomous, fluid, and amoral force -, and, on the other hand, in some sort of lucid vitalism perfectly incarnated by Jeanne Schwartz, Delphine Seyrig’s character.
