Die bauliche Maßnahme

In his latest film, Nikolaus Geyrhalter explores one of the most wildly discussed issues of our times: what is to be done with the waves of refugees? In his investigation, taking place on the border between Austria and Italy (namely in Brenner), the director makes inquiries into the repercussions of a European anti-immigrants policy, specifically into the authorities' decision to build a fence along the borderline, an absurd and rather symbolic obstacle against undocumented foreigners. The film is a compilation of extremely diverse portrait-interviews (with the border police staff, the milkman, the Senegalese workers, or with an elderly man who runs an organic animal farm), of essential comments ranging from contained xenophobia to helpless evasion and even a militant advocacy for the cause of those who have been exiled from their native lands. The film-maker doesn't shy away from purely panoramic scenes, shot — same as the interviews — in the aesthetic of the long-take and fused together to form a fascinating discourse on places and people.
