Inconfissões

synopsis

Decades after the death of her uncle, Luiz Roberto Galizia, an important figure of the Brazilian stage in the 1970s and ‘80s, young director Ana Galizia discovers his personal collection of photographs and video footage. The documentary that resulted from their juxtaposition is as much fragmentary, without filling too many of the blanks left behind from all these images of disparate moments in the everyday life of the protagonist, as it is brimming with the intensity of his presence, a direct effect of the selection made by the filmmaker. Not long into the film, we learn that her uncle’s death was the result of an AIDS related illness. Which is why, by ending in a long intimate series of photographs depicting his lovers in various sexual instances, the expression of a free and exuberant sensuousness, the film creates a polemic counterpart to the old prejudice identifying AIDS with promiscuity and shameful experiences that need to be kept from official biographies. “Unconfessions” is a tribute to vitality.
